Finding a News Article on MARVEL

3 choices for today:

1. Choose Health in the Subject Area column

  1. Choose Health Source: Consumer Edition
  2. Do an Advanced Search : try these search terms:
    1. Type in : Medicine : pull down box and choose SU : Subject Term
    2. AND : type in : therap* (this is known as a wild card; find out why!)
    3. OR : type in : treatment (Why did I use "OR"?)
    4. Finally : LIMIT Your Search – Click on "Full Text"  (Why does this limit your search??)
    5. Now you see Results! Make sure you look at the journal or magazine it is in : don’t choose an article from the Harvard Medical Review : none of us will understand it very well! Notice that the newest articles are listed first.

2. Choose Social Sciences in the Subject Area Column

  1. Choose Maine Newstand
  2. Choose Advanced Search when you get to the search screen
  3. Try the same terms as listed above (or you may be ready to play with some more specific terms : remember spelling counts!) When you type in "medicine" choose to have it appear in the abstract. What is an abstract? How can it be helpful to you?
  4. Note that these are all Maine newspapers! Again the news goes from the newest to oldest.

3. Search by a certain magazine. Our choice will be Newsweek

  1. Go back to the main MARVEL screen and choose the database "Academic Premier."
  2. Type in Newsweek in the search box. Click on SO : Journal Name. Now, you can use the terms "medicine" and "full text"
  3. Take a look at the results : I went over to the left-hand column and chose to look at articles just on treatment. See how it limited the # of articles we are looking at. (489 > 39)

Once you have found an article, please follow the PRINT instructions! Choose the Print icon at the top of the page of your article. You will see that it changes format; it saves paper. Then, print your article.

Want to see if there are any other articles you want to use, but you want to keep the one you are looking at? Just "Add to Folder" and you will be able to take a look at your folder when you are finished searching!
