Mainely Girls Book Club

Current Book Club Members Link to End-of-Year Evaluation.

Please come and join us! All girls in WDHS are welcome to become part
of our book club. Listen for the announcements which will tell you when a
new book has arrived. We meet periodically during lunch to discuss our
book. We are part of the state-wide group
"A Girl's Point of View Book Club"
.
There are now 80 elementary, middle and high school groups in the state!

Below are the groud rules and the purpose of each club:

The Ground Rules:

  1. Do not say things that are inflammatory, non-constructive, or at odds with the aims of the discussion group.

  2. Listen actively - respect others when they are talking.

  3. Do not be afraid to respectfully challenge one another by asking questions, but refrain from personal attacks - focus on ideas.

  4. Community growth depends on the inclusion of every individual voice. Everyone in the group should speak, not just a handful of individuals.

  5. Be consciious of body language and nonverbal responses - they can be as disrespectful as words.

The original name of the club in ME is: A Girl’s Point of View Book Club

The Main Purposes of the club are to:

  1. Examine girls' culture in a safe & comfortable environment.

  2. Explore new thoughts and ideas inspired by literature.

  3. Strengthen girls' pride about being female.

  4. Promote self-esteem.

  5. Establish a sense of community.

  6. Raise girls' interest in reading and literature.

The club provides girls of all reading levels and intellectual abilities an opportunity to read the best contemporary young adult fiction that focuses on issues many girls are facing today. The books provide a focus for discussing the challenges and concerns inherent in growing up female in the 21st century. The books, mostly novels with strong, female, primary characters, also provide role models of strength and courage for girls to contemplate.

Our choices for this year: Book Thief, 13 Reasons Why, Hanging onto Max, Cut, Room on Lorelei Street.
