FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
Reading is important! That is why my motto has been "Kids who read succeed!" for the past 23 years as a Library Media Specialist.
How many times have I heard students say "I'll never read anything when I get out of high school!" Have you ever thought about how hard that would be? How are you going to fill out an application for a job, read a menu in a fancy restaurant, check what movie is playing in the theatre this week-end? And, what happens when you are watching a show on TV and you can't figure out what has been said because there are words being used that you don't recognize?
Each time you sit down to read a book, not only are you increasing your knowledge of vocabulary, but you are expanding your knowledge base of what is familiar to you. Reading truly does open new worlds- different cultures and different ideas for you to explore. So, let's get started.
In order to learn about new books and to understand what we have in this library to use as you are assigned projects, you will need to have an orientation ("Introductory instruction concerning a new situation: orientation for incoming students" - American Heritage Dictionary).
