please noteA message for Mrs. Hallett : Read this great article on How to Pay for College - a Reader's Digest article 12-2009

The Maine legislature enacted An Act To Prevent Predatory Marketing Practices against Minors (PDF) on June 2, 2009.

This legislation bans collecting personal information from Maine residents under age 18 without verifiable parental consent. It has the unintended consequence of preventing minors from Maine from registering on free scholarship matching services like FastWeb because these services use personal information to match students with scholarships.

To help these students this article provides a list of Maine-specific scholarships. Many of these scholarships require the recipient to be a Maine resident. The definition of residency varies from award to award, but is typically from 1 to 4 years of state residency prior to application for the scholarship.

These awards represent a subset of the Maine scholarships included in the FastWeb scholarship database. Maine residents are encouraged to conduct a FastWeb scholarship search after they have reached age 18.

Guidance Forms:

Guidance Services:

Academic Advisement:  A large portion of the Guidance Counselor's time is spent with academic counseling.  This includes activities such as course scheduling, new enrollments, credit checks, college advisement, study skills development, scholarships, financial aid information, and classroom presentations.

Personal Counseling:  Short-term counseling is provided for all students, as needed.  Although the counselor does not provide long term, intensive therapy or psychiatric evaluations, he advises and refers students and parents to outside agencies and professionals.  Because personal emergencies do arise during school, the counselor is available to aid in crisis situations that involve students.

Career Counseling:  Career development can be obtained through several venues at Washburn District High School.  The Guidance Counselor is available to discuss career options and have a vast array of resources in his office.  The computer program, Choices, is located on all the computers in the school where students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities designed to assess learning styles and vocational interests, research colleges and scholarships.  Students will be matched with recommended jobs based on interests, scores, and abilities.

College Information ConnectEdu - Get your log-in information from Mrs. Hallett to access everything you need for college planning.

Liaison Services:  The referral/liaison segment of the guidance department includes roles such as:  a conciliator between students, parents, teachers, and administrators; a guide to outside community programs and resources; and a liaison with military, college, and vocational school representatives who visit regularly throughout the year.  Washburn District High School encourages parent-teacher conferences.  Please call the school Guidance Office to arrange a conference with teachers (455-4501).

Testing Program:  The Guidance Staff coordinates and administers several tests each school year and also keeps students informed about the College Board SAT and ACT testing dates.  Tests given include the PSAT, and Junior SAT.
